Books and cooking with Bonny White

The kindergartners are participating in University of Vermont Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Book-in-Bag series, a nutrition and literacy program offered free at school. Book-in-Bag is a series of six weekly nutrition lessons and activities that promote healthy food and activity choices for young elementary school students, while enhancing literacy and comprehension skills. Each meeting we will read a story book and prepare simple recipes that may enhance their exposure to new or different foods.

Kindergarten Engineers

The kindergarten engineers worked on building a structure to make shade for their "monsters" who were too hot in the sun (and along the way, the kindergartners found some shade for themselves under the tree in the garden!)

Full Day K

The kindergartners have done a great job with their first full days of kindergarten!  This week we have had music with Mrs. Corey, gym class with Mr. Greene, library with Mrs. Parks and art with Ms. W.

Students should return their library books on (or before) next Tuesday so they may check out another book. The library book box is a gray crate under the desk at the front door.

Kindergarten Engineers

The kindergartners have had fun working on our first engineering unit of the year.  They have been using recycled materials to build structures to reduce the warming effect of the sun on their “shade monster.”  Ask your child about this hands-on science unit!

Our First Weeks

Our first weeks have been busy and fun!  We have been focused on getting to know each other, our school and our classroom routines. The children are doing a great job settling in and making new friends!

We had some help exploring our school from characters.  After reading The Kissing Hand, we followed clues from “Chester the raccoon” as we found our way to the library, front office and health office.  So if your child mentions seeing a raccoon at school, please rest assured it was just a character from a beloved book about going to school for the first time!

In our classroom, we are lucky to have Brenda Wood as our full-time paraprofessional.

This is the first of this year’s classroom newsletters.  I will be sending one home in your child’s mail folder monthly (or more frequently if the need arises.) Please be sure to check your child’s folder each Friday, read the enclosed information and return the folder on Monday.  It is also a good idea to check your child's backpack each night just in case something needs to come home sooner.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Communication is an important part of our work as partners on behalf of your child’s educational growth and development.  You can reach me at school at 254-3743 x119 or at ENam@wsesu.org.
