4 Winds

What happens inside a dead tree?  That's what we learned about during our monthly 4 Winds lesson through a puppet show, as well as through hands-on exploration.  Thanks to Archie's mother and grandmother for being such great 4 Winds teachers!

As you may have heard from your child, our classroom was flooded on Tuesday morning due to a broken pipe. Everyone pitched in to clean up our classroom and the kindergartners did a great job being flexible during our adventurous day ! Luckily the pipe was repaired on Wednesday and we were back learning in our classroom again!

Kindergarten Engineers

The kindergartners have been working on a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) project.  We began this project by reading the story of The Gingerbread Man who runs away from the old woman and the old man who baked him, and finally gets eaten by the sly fox.  

After reading and acting out the story, we asked the following problem to the kindergartners: The Gingerbread Man ran too fast for the Little Old Man and the Little Old Woman.  If they bake another Gingerbread Man, how can they catch him before he gets to the fox? 

We looked at examples of traps built by children to catch a kitty who needed a bath. In our discussions, we talked about what engineers do and included vocabulary such as solve, design, tool, bait and camouflage. The kindergartners then designed a trap made out of recycled materials to catch the Gingerbread man. Thanks for all the materials that were sent in for this exciting project!

Academy School's Field Trip Fundraiser Reminder

Just a friendly reminder to keep on selling raffle tickets until December 10th.  We have some great prizes!  Your child brought home an envelope with his/her raffle tickets before the Thanksgiving break. All proceeds from the raffle go to fund Academy School's field trips. Please feel free to send in ticket sales anytime before the 10^th. The raffle will be drawn at the Academy School Community on December 10th from 5-7:30pm. Hope to see you there!!

Four Winds

Four Winds are monthly environmental lessons taught by parent (and grandparent!) volunteers. This month's theme was about leaves. Thank you Robin Morgan, Archie's mother, and Georgia, Archie's grandmother!
