Animals at Work using Pushes and Pulls!

Sarah from Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center helped the kindergarten scientists look for evidence of how animals use forces. For example, a dung beetle pushes a ball of dung with its back legs to use for food; a toad pushes out its sticky tongue to catch its food and pulls its tongue and prey back in its mouth; a weaver bird pushes and pulls blades of grass to create a nest; a squirrel pushes an acorn into the soil to eat later and it pulls away the soil to find the acorn to eat; a chimpanzee uses a sticks to pull out ants to eat from an anthill. Best of all, the kindergartners "became" those animals and were able to feel those forces in their bodies! For example, using a large exercise ball to represent a ball of dung, the kindergartners pushed the ball with their back legs!
