Kindergarten Writers

Here are the kindergarten writers hard at work sharing what they have learned about beavers with words and drawings.

Learning about beavers from Joan, an educator/naturalist from Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center.

Making (and eating!) "stores" of food for the winter

With Ms. Kathy's help, the kindergartners each made their own "store" of food for the winter with dried berries, seeds and nuts (like squirrels ,who stay active throughout the winter, prepare for themselves in the fall and then eat during the winter.)

We placed the "stores" of food around the forest and the kindergartners had to find their store (they had better luck than the squirrels who sometimes forget where the put their stores!)

Making Scat with Miss Kathy

We have been learning about how to identify animals in winter using their tracks and scat (animal droppings.)  For fun, Miss Kathy (Kathy Cassin, school garden educator) helped the kindergartners make edible scat with peanut butter, cocoa, and oats!  The kindergartners shaped their scat into different scat shapes (like round like a deer scat or tubular like a fox!)

Drumming in Music Class

During our music residency with Mrs. Davenport for the month of February (Black History month), the kindergartners are learning about music from Ghana and Zimbabwe, music from the Civil Rights movement, jazz, and contemporary artists. Here they are drumming to a song from Ghana!

Fun Forest Friday

We had so much fun on Forest Friday snowshoeing and and eating warm cheese quesadilla made over the campfire!

Kindergarten Hibernation

Like groundhogs who fill up their bellies all summer long, the kindergartners filled up their bellies at snack time, and then settled down to hibernate in the "dens" under their desks!

Choice Time

Choice Time is a favorite part of kindergarten!  The kindergartners get to follow their individual interests and choose what they would like to do with their time. Some favorite choice time activities are building (with blocks, legos, suction cups, and gears), imaginative play with cars or dolls at the dollhouse, and creating with play dough or through artwork, and reading books (we love Mo Willems' Piggie and Elephant books!)
