Animals in Winter

We have been studying animals in winter.  Through this unit, the kindergartners have been learning about the difference between living and non-living, what plants and animals need to survive (such as food and water), the relationship between the needs of different animals and the places they live (some animals migrate to a warmer place where they can find food), and how they can change the environment to meet their needs (such as storing food for the winter.) 

This unit combined both science and writing standards. Each child chose an animal that lives in Vermont and wrote an informative piece of writing about their animal. Please stop by and read the kindergartner's animals clues hanging on the bulletin board outside our classroom.

Joan Carey, from Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center, taught us about animals tracks and about how beavers change their environment by building dams to meet their needs for food and a safe home.
